This Week in Google and Tech Appearances

Let me tell you a funny story. Recently, I was a panelist on a Game Show episode of The Incomparable. That’s the podcast network on which I appear regularly on the main (“mothership”) Incomparable show and across many others on the network, and host the program Pants in the Boot. (We’re in our membership-drive month right now, producing extra episodes and audio commentaries for movies for our members.) The Game Show podcast rotates through regular shows we’ve invented, one-off concepts, and board-game/card-game playing.

On Lex Friedman’s task-oriented Friendly Competition, one round was called #glenning, named after my namedropping habit. This round asked other contestants and myself on which podcasts Glenn had appeared—points for uniqueness. One of my fellows included This Week in Tech (TWiT), a venerable show on a venerable eponymously named tech network. When it came to score, I couldn’t recall if I’d been on any TWiT show, as Lex would have counted that! Lex and his scorekeeper, Dan Moren, looked it up. We decided I had not, so the person suggesting it didn’t get a point.

Then a few weeks ago, I was asked at the last minute if I was available as a guest on This Week in Google on TWiT. After many years, I finally have two setups for video I’m happy with. One is right where I work in front of my computer with a controllable small diffused light and a green screen behind me; the other is a few feet away, where I have a larger soft-light panel, a bookshelf full of interesting titles, and framed art on the wall. I’d be asked to be on TWiT shows before and felt embarrassed about my video setup. This time, I said yes!

On the back of that appearance, TWiT booked me on their flagship program, which I appeared on yesterday.

The Game Show episode hasn’t aired yet in which TWiT was a “wrong” answer, so I informally am awarding my fellow contestant extra points for either predicting or shaping the future.

TWiT shows are a hoot to be on. We can talk expansively, take time with answers, and cover a lot of territory. Delighted to have been on two so recently and looking forward to potential future appearances.
